“Common criminal” – Enugu govt reacts to Simon Ekpa’s arrest, prepares court evidence

The Enugu State Government has praised the Finnish authorities for the arrest of Simon Ekpa, the Finland-based leader of the Autopilots group, describing him as a “common criminal, con man, and terrorist” with no genuine interest in the welfare of the Igbo people.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the government strongly condemned Ekpa’s alleged actions, accusing him of inciting violence and exploiting the emotions of the South East for personal gain.

The government also labeled Ekpa an alleged “murderer and fraudster” responsible for orchestrating attacks that have caused significant loss of life and property in the region.

Prof. Onyia stated that the state is prepared to provide evidence of Ekpa’s involvement in atrocities against the Igbo people to support his prosecution, whether in Finland or Nigeria.

“Simon Ekpa has, for too long, used his base in Finland to propagate violence, instill fear, and destroy the entrepreneurial spirit that defines the Igbo people.

“He thrives on manipulating and extorting his people under the guise of fighting for their interests and the restoration of Biafra,” the statement read.

The arrest, the government said, aligns with the demands of Governor Peter Mbah’s administration, which has consistently called for action against Ekpa. It expressed optimism that Ekpa’s trial would help restore peace and stability in the South East.

The government concluded by reiterating its commitment to ensuring justice and fostering a secure and prosperous environment for its citizens, urging other stakeholders to join in the fight against elements that threaten the region’s progress.
