Nigerian goalkeeper Maduka Okoye has come under heavy criticism following the Super Eagles’ surprising 2-1 loss to Rwanda in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier on Monday, 18 November 2024, in Uyo.
The Super Eagles, already assured of a spot at AFCON 2025 in Morocco, took the lead in the 59th minute when substitute Samuel Chukwueze scored from Frank Onyeka’s pass. However, Rwanda staged a dramatic comeback, equalising in the 72nd minute through Jojea Kwizera. Two minutes later, Innocent Nshuti scored the winner after firing past Okoye, leaving Nigeria stunned.
Okoye, who was chosen to start in goal due to Stanley Nwabali’s absence for personal reasons, was widely blamed by fans for his role in both Rwandan goals. His decision-making and reactions were heavily questioned, with many fans taking to social media to express their frustration.
The Udinese goalkeeper had recently regained form in the Italian Serie A, earning him a recall to the national team. However, his performance in Uyo overshadowed his club achievements, with fans calling for changes in the goalkeeping department.
Despite the loss, Nigeria finished top of their group and will participate in the tournament next year. Still, the defeat serves as a wake-up call for both players and coaching staff as they prepare for tougher challenges ahead.
