Boavista announced the news on their website, praising Onyemaechi’s strong performances during a tough season for the team.

On receiving the award, the 24-year-old thanked the fans who voted for him but emphasized that it’s all about the team’s effort. “It’s not just about this award—it’s about the team’s hard work, even when results aren’t in our favor,” Onyemaechi said.

The versatile defender, who has been crucial for Boavista this season, spoke about their next important match against FC Arouca. “Every game is a final for us. We want to get back to winning and give our fans their first home win. They’ve supported us through everything,” he added.

Onyemaechi is known for his flexibility on the field and said he is ready to play in any position to help the team. “I feel comfortable playing in defence, midfield, or attack. The most important thing is to be ready to help the team,” he explained.

Boavista, currently 17th in the Primeira Liga with 12 points, will face last-placed Arouca, who also have 12 points. Onyemaechi is hopeful about improving the team’s position. “Our main goal is to climb the league table. Personal goals matter, but the team’s success is the most important,” he said.

Onyemaechi joined Boavista from Feirense in 2022, initially on loan, before signing permanently in 2023. On the international stage, he made his debut for Nigeria in a 6-0 win over São Tomé and Príncipe during the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and played a key role in the Super Eagles’ run to the final of the tournament.
