2026WCQ: Heartbreak for Nigeria as Zimbabwe force draw in Uyo

Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup suffered a major setback after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Zimbabwe in Uyo.

The result leaves the Super Eagles with just seven points from six matches, trailing group leaders South Africa by six points.

Match Summary

Nigeria started strongly, with Victor Osimhen testing Zimbabwe’s goalkeeper Washington Arubi in the opening minutes. However, Zimbabwe gradually settled into the game, defending well and limiting Nigeria’s chances.

Despite dominating possession in the first half, the Super Eagles struggled to break down Zimbabwe’s defence. Nigeria had a penalty appeal just before half-time when Osimhen went down in the box, but the referee dismissed the claims, and the first half ended goalless.

In the second half, Nigeria continued to push for a breakthrough. Substitute Tolu Arokodare made an impact, holding up play well before setting up Ola Aina for a cross that Osimhen headed home to give Nigeria the lead.

Zimbabwe almost equalised when Terrence Dzvukamanja hit the crossbar with the goal at his mercy. Nigeria had a chance to extend their lead, but Wilfred Ndidi missed a clear opportunity.

The Super Eagles were punished for their missed chances in stoppage time when Tawanda Chirewa dribbled into the box and scored past Stanley Nwabali, securing a dramatic 1-1 draw for Zimbabwe.

The result is a huge blow to Nigeria’s World Cup qualification hopes, leaving them with little margin for error in their remaining matches.
