Lagos Assembly Crisis: 26 Lawmakers Boycott Plenary As Obasa Resumes Duty As Speaker

Twenty-six out of the 40 lawmakers of the Lagos State House of Assembly on Thursday, February 27, boycotted the plenary following the resumption of Mudashiru Obasa as the speaker of the House.

Politics Nigeria gathered that there were only four lawmakers in attendance as Obasa, who was earlier impeached while away in the United States of America, stormed the Assembly Complex with some security operatives.

The plenary session began after the operatives successfully forced the doors of the chamber open granting the embattled Speaker and his supporters access to the House.

While the session was still ongoing as of 3 pm on Thursday, sources said the lawmakers who boycotted the plenary did so in support of the previously installed Speaker, Mojisola Meranda who was appointed to replace Obasa.

Gathering at the Assembly’s garden, the lawmakers said they would not recognise Obasa as Speaker.

Protesting Obasa’s resumption, one of the lawmakers who pleaded anonymity said, “He was not elected as Speaker by his constituency.

“For nearly a decade, we endured his authoritarian style of leadership. Enough is enough, and we are not backing down.”

However, lawmakers seen supporting Obasa include Ayinde Akinsanya (Mushin Constituency I) and Noheem Adams (Mushin Constituency II).

They accompanied the embattled Speaker to the Assembly complex and are sitting through the plenary session headed by Obasa.
