The leadership of the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, approved a bill for the establishment of a Federal University in Imo State.
The motion sponsored by Patrick Ndubueze aims for an act to establish the Federal University Okigwe Imo State.
Read and passed for its third reading on the floor of the plenary, the bill will make provision for the university’s management and administration and other related matters.
Approving the passage of the bill, the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin commended the sponsor of the bill.
Jibrin stated that education is the bedrock of every nation and an institution such as this is important for the development of Nigeria.
“Any nation, any society, any country that treats the issue of education with levity will be doomed. Of course people are saying that we have several universities in this country but they are not enough,”Jibrin lamented.
Comparing Nigeria’s population with institutions available, Jibrin said there is a need to establish more universities.
“We have a very strong population with promising youth and what we have to do for them is to provide them with education so we can have the necessary human capital to drive the process of building our country. And it is through this kind of university that we can be able to do,” Jibrin added.
