The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd), has said that the safety of lives and property is the top priority of his leadership.
Ibas made the disclosure on Friday during a meeting with local stakeholders at Eberi, the headquarters of Omuma Local Government Area.
Represented by the state’s Commissioner of Police, CP Olugbenga Adepoju, Ibas said the engagement was necessary to understand the challenges facing different parts of the state, especially in areas of welfare and security, and to find lasting solutions.
He emphasized that maintaining peace is not only the government’s job but a shared responsibility. He urged the Omuma LGA Administrator, Ikechi Nwala, to hold regular town hall meetings involving police officers, traditional leaders, politicians, women, and youth groups to strengthen peace and order.
The Sole Administrator also encouraged the community to highlight old but important projects needing attention and asked youths to protect government-owned facilities in their areas.
In response, Mr. Nwala appealed for more police presence in Omuma to improve safety. He mentioned that land grabbing, politically motivated arrests, and illegal oil bunkering are major issues affecting the LGA.
Nwala alleged that many of these crimes are carried out by people he described as intruders from neighbouring Abia State.
Vice Admiral Ibas was appointed in March after a state of emergency was declared in Rivers State.
