The Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, has cautioned Nigerian sports journalists against sensational and unverified reporting, stating that the credibility of the media directly influences national unity and the growth of the sports industry.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) 60th Anniversary and Diamond Jubilee celebration in Abuja, Dikko stressed that journalists must prioritise accuracy over speed in today’s fast-paced information ecosystem.

“If we succeed, we succeed together; and if we fail, it is also together. Our doors are always open—but for the success of our country, we must be guided by facts and truth,” Dikko warned.
He condemned the recent circulation of baseless claims alleging that FIFA and CAF funds were released to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), describing such reports as “intentionally misleading narratives capable of creating unnecessary public distrust.”
Dikko challenged media professionals to leverage their influence to strengthen public confidence rather than fuel misinformation.
He urged sports journalists to focus on agenda-setting reportage that enhances the reputation of Nigerian sports, inspires patriotism, and supports national teams—particularly as the Super Eagles push for qualification for the FIFA World Cup.
The week-long Diamond Jubilee—tagged “The Power of Sports Media: Honouring Its Legacy, Shaping the Future”—will feature lectures, award ceremonies, and interactive sessions spotlighting six decades of SWAN’s role in shaping sports discourse and national identity.
Also in attendance were the Director-General of the National Institute for Sports, Comrade Philip Shaibu, and the Wife of the Senate President, who both applauded SWAN’s contribution to national cohesion through responsible sports journalism.
The anniversary events continue through the week with discussions centred on the evolution of sports reporting, ethical standards, and the future of media-driven sports development in Nigeria.
