Madugu Confident as Super Falcons Face Benin in WAFCON Qualifiers Despite Echegini’s Injury Blow

Head Coach Justine Madugu remains confident about Nigeria’s chances against Benin Republic in their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) qualifying fixture, even after a major setback — the loss of key midfielder Jennifer Echegini to injury.

Echegini, who famously scored Nigeria’s winning goal in the 2024 Women’s AFCON Final against hosts Morocco in Rabat, has been ruled out of both legs of the qualifier after sustaining a hamstring injury while playing for Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) on Monday night.

The influential midfielder’s absence means she will miss Friday’s first leg at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé, as well as the return leg at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja next Tuesday.

Despite the setback, Madugu insists the Super Falcons remain focused and motivated to get the job done.

“We have a strong squad with depth and quality,” said the coach. “Echegini’s injury is unfortunate, but we have capable replacements. The team’s spirit and commitment remain very high.”

Team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who also plays for PSG, is expected to arrive in Lomé on Tuesday night, alongside the Mexico-based duo of Osinachi Ohale and Chinwendu Ihezuo, USA-based defenders Michelle Alozie and midfielder Deborah Abiodun, Canada-based forward Esther Okoronkwo, and Italy-based defender Shukurat Oladipo.

The camp, which opened with nine players, grew to 11 players on Monday night following the arrivals of Portugal-based midfielder Christy Ucheibe and goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie. Saudi Arabia-based defender Ashley Plumptre joined the team on Tuesday afternoon, further strengthening the squad ahead of the crucial tie.

Nigeria will be looking to take control of the fixture in Lomé before sealing qualification for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on home soil in the return leg.
