Moroccan star Achraf Hakimi has been crowned the 2025 CAF Player of the Year, confirming widespread expectations ahead of the awards ceremony in Rabat on Wednesday night.
Hakimi, who had narrowly missed out on the award in recent years, finally claimed Africa’s top individual honour after an exceptional season for both club and country.
The Paris Saint-Germain right-back enjoyed one of the best years of his career, playing a key role in PSG’s dominance. He helped the club win the French Ligue 1 title, the French Cup, and, most importantly, the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club’s history. His opening goal in the Champions League final against Inter Milan was a defining moment of the match and underlined his importance to the team.
Hakimi’s performances for the Moroccan national team also strengthened his case. His leadership, calmness and tactical discipline helped Morocco maintain their position as one of the strongest teams on the continent.
The competition for the award was strong. Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah, a two-time winner, was also in top form, while Nigeria’s Victor Osimhen remained a key contender. However, Hakimi’s consistency, major trophies and impact in crucial matches gave him the edge this year.
By winning the 2025 CAF Player of the Year award, Hakimi has added another remarkable chapter to his career, becoming the first Moroccan to lift the honour in many years. His victory has been described by many as well deserved and long overdue.
