Former Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has issued a powerful rallying cry to the Nigerian squad ahead of today’s decisive World Cup playoff clash against Gabon, insisting that every single player must rise to the occasion if the country is to avoid the unthinkable — missing the World Cup for a second consecutive time.
Speaking with a sense of urgency that reflects the magnitude of the fixture, Mikel made it clear that the team cannot afford excuses or complacency at this stage, stressing that qualification is not optional but an absolute national obligation.

“This is a game where everybody has to step up,” Mikel said. “There is no other choice — Nigeria must qualify for the World Cup. The players know what is at stake, and they have to show it on the pitch.”
Responding to concerns over Nigeria’s heavy reliance on star striker Victor Osimhen, Mikel warned that the burden cannot rest on one man’s shoulders. While acknowledging Osimhen’s brilliance and importance to the team, he insisted that the entire squad must carry responsibility.
“Osimhen cannot do everything,” he added. “Every player must carry their own weight. If Nigeria is going to win today, the whole team must function as one.”
Mikel also addressed the off-field turbulence that rocked the camp earlier this week, after the players staged a training boycott over unpaid bonuses. While he acknowledged their right to demand what is owed, he urged them to set aside distractions once they step onto the pitch.
“They’ve made their point, and now the focus must be football,” he said. “Qualification comes first. There is no room for divided attention.”
With kickoff approaching, Mikel expressed confidence that despite the drama and pressure, the Super Eagles possess the quality to overcome Gabon — but only if they play with commitment, discipline, and unity.
“This is the moment to show character,” he concluded. “Nigeria expects victory — and the boys must deliver.”
