Former Watford and Birmingham City striker Troy Deeney has criticised Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong, describing him as “insecure” following the defender’s recent comments after Nigeria’s 4–1 victory over Gabon.
The debate began when CBS pundit Michael Lahoud questioned Troost-Ekong’s leadership, claiming the defender speaks more off the pitch than on it. Lahoud suggested the centre-back has not shown enough authority during matches and should lead more through his performances.
Deeney, who played alongside Troost-Ekong at Watford during the 2020/2021 season, backed Lahoud’s view. He argued that Ekong lacks the toughness needed to push hard for the national team’s demands during disputes with football officials.
After the win over Gabon, Troost-Ekong responded, saying he was disappointed Deeney chose to criticise him publicly rather than calling him directly. He said he had always supported Deeney at Watford and was surprised by the comments.
Deeney has now issued another response, insisting he did nothing wrong and suggesting Ekong’s reaction shows insecurity.
Speaking on TalkSPORT, Deeney said: “If you have to start listing your achievements or the number of caps you have, then you’re not secure in yourself. Nigeria won the game, so just enjoy it.”
He added that real leadership requires a harder edge, especially during negotiations with the football federation, and claimed he never saw that side of Ekong during their time together at Watford.
Despite the back-and-forth, Deeney also said he has no personal issue with the Nigerian captain, describing him as a “good kid” but insisting his comments were simply honest opinions.
Nigeria now shift focus to their World Cup play-off final against DR Congo in Rabat, where Troost-Ekong is expected to lead the team once again. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM WAT on Sunday.
