Nigerian writer Charles Ogbu, has called out the Enugu State Police Command for failing 19-year-old Loveth Uloma Nwangwu, who was k!lled by her uncle, Emeka Emmanuel Nwangwu.
LIB reported that officers from the Nsukka Urban Division, assisted by the Neighbourhood Watch Group, arrested the suspect on Monday after he allegedly stormed a pharmacy in Nsukka where the victim was being treated and violently assaulted her.
The unfortunate incident came days after she reportedly accused him of years of s3xual abuse and threats to her life.
In a video shared by Enugu media personality, Chijinkem Ugwuanyi, Loveth revealed that the suspect also threatened to k!ll her mother and brothers if she doesnt return to his house.
It was gathered that three days before the attack, Loveth had lodged a detailed complaint at the Umabor Police Division, telling the officers that she had lived with the suspect since 2019 when she was 13 following the d3ath of his wife.
During that period, she alleged he repeatedly abused her s3xually, cut her off from family and friends, and threatened her whenever she attempted to escape.
She fled to her family home in Enugu-Ezike in late November, but the suspect allegedly tracked her down, threatened her with a gun, and forced her back to his residence in Ibeku-Opi, Nsukka LGA.
She managed another escape and returned to the police station, where she was issued a medical form for examination.
The state police spokesperson, SP Daniel Ndukwe, in a statement on Tuesday disclosed that the family were invited for a preliminary inquiry, during which the suspect allegedly confessed and asked for forgiveness.
The victim’s family citing cultural sensitivities, opted not to pursue a criminal case but instead proposed spiritual cleansing because of the incestuous nature of the allegations.
Taking to Facebook on Wednesday, Charles Ogbu slammed the police and Umabor DPO who authorized the release of the suspect after the deceased lodged a complaint against him.
According to Ogbu, the police are the real k!llers of the victim because if they had arrested him and kept him in jail, Loveth would be alive today.
“She later escaped using a spare key and reported the incident to the police, who issued her a medical report form for examination. The suspect and family were invited to the station, where he confessed, sought forgiveness, and promised to return her property. The family, citing personal ties, initially chose not to prosecute the case but opted for spiritual cleansing due to the incestuous and abominable act against the victim,” Charles wrote.
“A victim went to Umabor Police Division, Nsuka to report a suspect for s3xual abuse (which has been going on since 2019), forced imprisonment and using firearm to threaten her each time she tried complaining publicly and THE SUSPECT came to the station and CONFESSED TO THE CRIMES but because the victim’s family sought for spiritual cleansing instead of prosecution, the POLICE ALLOWED THE CRIMINAL TO GO FREE and that same criminal ended up k!ll!ng the victim.
“The real k!ller of this innocent girl is the Nigeria Police Force, specifically the stupid Umabor DPO who authorized the release of a self confessed criminal who should have faced prosecution seeing as crime is an offense AGAINST THE STATE which even the forgiveness of the victim cannot absolve the criminal from answering for his crime.
Daniel Ndukwe, the public expects to hear progress report on the PROSECUTION of the DPO of Umabor Police Division The unfortunate incident came days after she reportedly accused him of years of s3xual abuse and threats to her life.”
