The National Sports Commission (NSC) has issued a strong clarification stating that no association, group, or body, national or international, has been recognised to represent Nigeria in any Flag Football activity or competition.

In a formal statement on Tuesday, the Commission emphasized that no organisation currently holds official authority to act on behalf of Nigeria in any Flag Football capacity, reaffirming that only the NSC has the legal mandate to approve, regulate, and supervise sports federations in the country.

This development comes as the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) formally withdraws the provisional letter earlier issued to the Nigeria American Football Association (NAFA) and the group operating under the name Nigerian Flag Football. The withdrawal nullifies any prior impression of endorsement, pending the formal establishment of an approved national federation.
The NSC noted that the clarification became necessary following multiple claims by various groups suggesting national or international recognition.
According to the Director General of the NSC, the Commission is currently engaging all stakeholders to finalize a single, unified Flag Football Federation for Nigeria.
He stated: “The National Sports Commission is engaging stakeholders to complete the process of establishing a unified national Flag Football Federation. No group has been recognised, no decision has been finalized, and no organisation is authorised to represent Nigeria.”
He further stressed that the NSC is committed to a transparent, inclusive, and globally compliant federation structure that aligns with national sports development objectives.
The Commission assured athletes, coaches, corporate partners, and international bodies that official approval, inauguration, and election timelines will be announced in the coming days.
NSC reaffirmed that until the official Flag Football Federation is constituted, no association is permitted to organise, claim, or represent Nigeria in any continental or global Flag Football engagement.
